patterns & practices Application Architecture Guide 2.0

Welcome to the patterns & practices Application Architecture Guide 2.0 project site! This guide provides design-level guidance for the architecture and design of applications built on the .NET Framework. It focuses on the most common types of applications, partitioning application functionality into layers, components, and services, and walks through their key design characteristics. This guide is a collaborative effort between patterns & practices, product teams, and industry experts.

Now Available on MSDN!

October 2009 - The completed Application Architecture Guide 2nd Edition is now available on MSDN here. The printed version will be available from your favorite bookstore in a month or so. Since the final draft of guide was published on this site early this year, we’ve been busy driving the guide through a final set of reviews and polishing the content. We’ve restructured the guide to make it easier to read and understand, and made it easier to find your way around so you can more easily find the guidance that’s relevant to you. We’ve also incorporated a lot of the feedback that we’ve received from the community.

Knowledge Base

The guide was developed in conjunction with our Application Architecture Guide v2.0 Knowledge Base Project. The knowledge base project was used to inform and steer the guide during its development. The App Arch Knowledge Base includes a large amount of material that elborates on specific topics in the main guide. It also includes draft material from the main guide that is targeted and packaged for more specifc audiences, such as the Pocket Guide series.
